“We’re hiring.” No phones allowedĪ new state law requires students to keep cellphones silenced and away during classes, and OCPS has decided students can’t use them at lunch either. “Please call us,” Vazquez said at Monday’s press conference. Like districts around the state, it also will continue to recruit and hire teachers after classes begin. OCPS will use district staff, school administrators and substitutes to cover classes without permanent teachers. “Sadly, the numbers across the state are as alarming,” Superintendent Maria Vazquez said during last week’s school board meeting. OCPS had 450 teacher vacancies last week, and there were hundreds more in neighboring districts, as Florida’s ongoing teacher shortage continues. “I can’t wait to see those children once again on the Riverdale campus,” said Angie Gallo, an Orange County School Board member, at OCPS’ back-to-school press conference Monday at the redone school. After about $3 million worth of work, including 70,000 square feet of new tile and carpet, the campus is ready to operate again. The school was relocated to space in East River High School for the bulk of the 2022-23 school year while its water-logged campus was repaired. OCPS also reopens Riverdale Elementary in east Orange County, which was flooded during Hurricane Ian. The middle school technically debuted two years ago, but it shared space on the campus of Horizon High School. OCPS opens its newest middle school, Water Spring Middle in Horizon West, this week, too. Cole Academy, Lake County’s second K-8 school, is pictured in Clermont on Thursday, August 3, 2023.
